Postgraduate Study at the Department of Performance Studies

The Department of Performance Studies offers a range of postgraduate study options. For the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, the student undertakes a substantial piece of original research, under close supervision from a member of the academic staff, the results of which are presented in a written thesis. The Master of Arts (Research) and Doctor of Arts (DArts) degrees both involve some postgraduate coursework units which the student takes as part of the preparation for a comparatively shorter research thesis. To download a pdf version of the Faculty of Arts Postgraduate Handbook, in which you will find full details of Degree structures, follow the link from the Faculty website.

Note that, since these are all designated research degrees, students can apply for an exemption from fees under the Commonwealth Research and Training Scheme (RTS). Also, the University’s Research Office can provide advice concerning scholarships such as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA). For information about prerequisites and course requirements, follow the link as above.

How to Apply for a Postgraduate Research Degree in Performance Studies

For advice on how to present a research proposal and whether or not appropriate supervision is available, prospective students should contact, in the first instance, , Chair of the Department and Postgraduate Coordinator. We also suggest you look at staff members’ research profiles and the list of current and recently completed postgraduate theses. We are particularly proud of the achievements of our postgraduates over the last fifteen years, and invite prospective candidates to look at the kinds of projects that have been undertaken by recent graduates, as well as current work. We are also happy to have prospective students sit in on the weekly postgraduate seminar, where some of these outstanding research works-in-progress are first discussed.
