The Rex Cramphorn Studio

Conditions of Use

The Rex Cramphorn Studio was designed to accommodate the practical projects that are an integral part of the Department’s teaching and research program. When it is not required for such activities, it is made available to other users in the following categories and for the following purposes:

  1. University clients such as Academic Departments, SUDS, Classoc and the Celtic Society (no charge).
  2. Professional companies developing new work (mostly no charge but see below).
  3. Artists and companies conducting workshops and masterclasses (conditions for these activities are negotiable, and may include either a small rental charge or free participation for DPS staff or student/s).

General rules and conditions

To be read in conjunction with the User's Agreement (pdf).

  1. The Department allocates the Studio at its discretion. Preference is given to innovative theatre and performance, to work which has some relevance to the Department’s general interests, and to artists who are, have been or will be involved in other projects or workshops initiated by the Department.
  2. In some cases, no rent is charged. It is a condition of use, however, that the Department be permitted to observe and, if it wishes, to document or record the work of users. As with all other video recordings in the Department’s Archive, such tapes may only be viewed for academic purposes.
  3. Coffee-making facilities and a microwave are available, but users will provide their own coffee and other supplies. The studio, foyer, and coffee-making facilities are to be left clean and tidy. Food must not be left out: use the fridge. On leaving the Studio, dishes must be clean (not merely rinsed). The fridge must be emptied and wiped out. The staff kitchen of the Department is not available for Rex Studio users without prior permission. (Cost of cleaning, if required, is $40.00 per hour plus consumables.)
  4. Telephone, fax, photocopying and other administrative services are only available from the Department on a user pays basis and with prior permission.
  5. Users may be charged for breakages and for consumable items.
  6. If floor tape is used to mark up the floor, it must be removed at the end of the residency. Similarly, anything stuck on walls must be removed. Note: no blu-tack is to be used as it stains the walls. (Cost of removal will be $80 per hour plus materials.)
  7. The Studio is separately keyed and security-alarmed, so that users may work at any time of the day or night during their booking; a rehearsal schedule and full contact list should, however, be given to the Technical Director as soon as possible. One person in the company must be nominated in advance as the individual responsible for key, security code, locking up the Studio and switching off equipment. That person should make an appointment to see the Technical Director in the week before the beginning of the project to discuss their intentions and needs. The Studio must be locked every time the user/s leave the Studio.
  8. General safety precautions apply: if the fire alarm sounds, the user/s must leave the building and assemble on the forecourt of the Faculty of Education building.
  9. Outside users who are not on the University salary payroll are not covered by the University’s insurance (including Workers’ Compensation and public liability). Users must make their own insurance arrangements.
  10. In general, the Studio is made available to outside users on the understanding that they provide whatever technical crew they require. The Department’s limited staff is for the most part occupied with Department projects and can usually offer only advice to users. In particular cases it may be possible to assist with aspects of production.
  11. The equipment available in the Studio will be at the Technical Director’s discretion and should be discussed with him in advance. Do not use and/or remove existing equipment in the Studio without permission.
  12. The workshop adjoining the Studio is not available to users without the prior permission of the Technical Director.
  13. The driveway outside the Studio may be used for dropping off and removing equipment, but not for general parking. (You are likely to be booked if you park there: the fine is over $100.00.)*
  14. The Studio is not a licensed theatre. Members of the public may attend performances, as in other such venues, on the basis of entry by donation. Similarly, alcohol and food may be offered to guests, but not sold.
  15. If performances/showings are given in the Studio, it is appropriate to invite members of staff of the Department to attend. (Pigeonholes for each member of staff are to be found in the foyer of the Department.)
  16. On the last day of use of the Studio, users must remove all equipment, clothes, materials, rubbish etc., return the key and sign the key book in order to receive the refund of their deposit. (Late return of the key will mean a forfeit of the deposit).
  17. Users must provide the Department with a short report (one page) on
what was intended and what was achieved during the residency in the Studio. If a video recording is made of a showing or performance, a copy of the tape is to be lodged with the report. An additional request may be made for the Department to video and photograph projects in the Rex for use in teaching, research and publication.

* There is some off-street parking in the areas around the University, although in many of these areas 1 or 2 hour limits are imposed. Parking on the University campus costs $15.00 per day, or $2.00 per hour after 3pm. Heavy penalties are imposed for non-compliance. Parking at the carpark behind the Seymour Centre is available for $2.00 per hour, with a maximum of $6.00 per day. (In some limited instances and by prior arrangement it may be possible for the Department to organise free parking for one vehicle.)
