Tim Fitzpatrick joined Performance Studies in the 1980s from the Italian department. He is currently seconded to the School of Languages and Cultures as Head of School, but continues to teach and conduct research in Performance Studies. His most recent work centres on the role which Elizabethan playwrights played, through their playtexts, in the organisation of performances in the public playhouses.

• Part of a larger process of collaboration with Gay McAuley and Laura Ginters, along with John Golder (UNSW) and Jacqueline Martin (QUT), this work examines and compares 16th and 17th century performance preparation processes in Italy and London.
• Performance implications of Elizabethan stage directions
• This work has led to an extended public dialogue in the pages of Theatre Notebook with Andrew Gurr about the extent to which Elizabethan playtexts can be analysed for information about performance and about Elizabethan performance preparation processes in a theatrical culture which privileged rapid turnover of plays in repertory.
