Joy completed her Honours and Doctoral degrees in the Faculty of Economics and Business and is currently teaching and researching in the Department of Political Economy (Faculty of Arts). Joy's research has focused primarily on theories, policy and governance for sustainability in ‘liberal’ societies and she is now extending these concerns to China in the context of its convergence with capitalist economies. Her current research also includes archival work at the Karl Polanyi Institute for Political Economy in Quebec, and the conceptual intersections between political economy and economic sociology. Joy also has an ongoing interest in the processes of teaching and learning and has completed the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) at the University of Sydney.
