Religion,
Literature
and the
Arts
The Society for Studies in Religion, Literature and the
Arts is located within the Department of Studies in Religion
at the University of Sydney.
The Society is a descendant of ACU's Centre for Studies
in Religion, Literature and the Arts which derived from the
original RLA Project founded jointly by the School of
Studies in Religion, University of Sydney, the Department of
Literature and Languages, ACU, and the Institute for
Theology and the Arts, Sydney.
Those closely involved in the first International
Australian Conference in ROLA in 1994 were Associate
Professor James Tulip (University of Sydney), Associate
Professor Michael Friffith and Dr Ross Keating (ACU) and the
Reverend Rod Pattenden (Institute of Theology and the
Arts).
At the 1997 RLA Conference the newly founded Society for
RLA registered its first membership from among the delegates
and Colette Rayment became the first President of the
Society. In November of 1998 the Society took up residence
within the University of Sydney.
Through the work of scholars and practitioners in
leterature, religion, music, visual arts, philosophy,
history, film and dance, Society RLA explores the human
capacity to yearn for the ineffable. This endeavour cuts
across the boundaries of faiths and cultures while at the
same time revering them and the traditions they uphold.
Society RLA equally values the inherent spirituality of
writers and artists who work outside any of the faith
systems.
Society RLA organises lectures, exhibitions, performances
and conferences and publishes the fruits of those
events.
