Honours program
This honours degree (fourth year Spanish and Latin American Studies) is a passport to travel, study and work in Spain or Latin America. An honours degree is also an excellent general qualification in Arts.
Joint or double honours are also possible. For more information about honours generally at the University of Sydney, please visit the Faculty of Arts honours website.
The Spanish and Latin American Studies honours program is designed to extend both the linguistic and cultural competencies of students who already have an advanced knowledge of the Spanish language. Honours involves four semester-length seminar courses on different topics in Latin American and Spanish culture and society, an advanced language course, and a dissertation of 12-15,000 words on a topic of interest to the student, prepared with the guidance of a member of staff.
By the end of the honours course, students will:
- have the ability to read critically, and fully understand, a wide variety of high-level texts in Spanish (journalistic, academic, literary, filmic etc.),
- be able to independently research and evaluate Spanish and Latin American culture using appropriate critical and theoretical approaches,
- have deepened their knowledge of selected aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture and society,
- be able to formulate their own opinions on these cultural texts and social issues, and communicate them effectively both in English and Spanish.
You should also download the Spanish Honours Handbook for more information.
Students wanting to enrol in the honours course require the permission of the department and must have completed 48 senior credit points in Spanish (as a major) with a credit average or better.
