Christine Inglis - Honoraray Associate Professor
Current Position
Professor Christine Inglis, Director of the Multicultural and Migration Research Centre, has been associated with the University of Sydney since 1975 when you joined the Department of Education and then the Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific before joining Sociology and Social Policy in 2006.
Research Interests
Christine’s major research focus has been on migration and ethnic relations in Australia and Southeast Asia. She led a major ARC research project on Transnationalism and Ctiizenship which is examining the experiences of transnationalism among Turkish, Chinese and Hong Kong born in Sydney and Brisbane. This study, which parallels work by Canadian colleagues, is providing a basis for a book examining Contemporary Chinese Transnationalism which is to be published by Hong Kong University Press. The project has also provided the basis for an ARC International Linkage Grant with the University of Paris VII which is comparing the experiences of transnationalism among Chinese and Turkish groups in Europe and Australia.
The role of education has been an important area explored in her work. This has most recently included a co-authored chapter in a book examining the experiences of second generation youth in Australia and a number of other countries (Inglis & Model, in press). Following from this work she is about to commence a study, funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, comparing the experiences of Turkish and Lebanese Second Generation youth in Sydney and Melbourne. Again, this work will provide a basis for comparing the experiences of these youth in Australia with those from eight European countries. Her policy oriented work include a monograph, Planning Education for Diversity which is being written for the Fundamentals of Educational Planning Series of UNESCO’s International Institute for Educational Planning in Paris.
Other Offices Held
A frequent reviewer for journals in the area of migration and ethnic relations, Christine is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Multicultural Societies and the British Journal of Sociology. She has played a major role on the executives of scholarly associations including the Asian Studies Association of Australia and the International Sociological Association where she has been President of its Research Committee on Ethnic, Race and Minority Relations as well as the first Australian member of the ISA’s Council. From 1998 to 2002 she was also ISA’s Vice-President with responsibility for publications.
