Current Position:
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Research interests:
Tim’s various research interests are driven by a desire to advance a more holistic, critically informed analysis of ‘heritage’. Working on Cambodia over a number of years has led to a strong interest in understanding the simultaneous and often contradictory challenges which emerge around heritage and tourism within societies suffering from, or recovering from, periods of armed conflict. In 2009 he will be a Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge, and looking at such issues in relation to Croatia, Sri Lanka and Kashmir.
Tim is also now developing the inter-disciplinary initiative, SOCooLH (Sustaining Our Cool Living Heritage), which examines the architectural designs and social practices of a pre-air-conditioning era in relation to current debates around sustainability and rising energy costs. The project focuses on the Asia Pacific region and is being developed in collaboration with universities in Hawaii, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
More broadly Tim has a general interest in advancing critical, interpretative approaches to heritage. He is working on a book that will examine heritage in relation to post-conflict/disaster reconstruction; urbanization and sustainability; citizenship, the state and cultural rights; postcolonial theory; Asian tourism; Modernity in Asia and Middle East.
