Linda Barwick

I am currently Associate Professor (Research Only) in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, and Director of PARADISEC, the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures, a cross-institutional collaborative project for preservation and access to Australian researchers' field recordings of endangered languages and cultures of the Asia-Pacific region. I also continue my longstanding interest in Italian traditional music, the area of my doctoral research.

My core research interest is in singing and song. I have undertaken field research in Central and Northern Australia, Italy and the Philippines, and enjoy working with linguists to produce well-documented published recordings of song, in collaboration with indigenous communities. I have recently helped to produce Wurrurrumi Kun-borrk: Songs from Western Arnhem Land by Kevin Djimarr, with notes by Murray Garde (Sydney: Sydney University Press, in production in June 2007).

I am particularly interested in the language of song, musical analysis of non-Western song traditions, and the implications of emerging digital and networking technologies for establishing community access points to research results.
