Postgraduate Study in the Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts offers 25 postgraduate coursework degrees at Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate level, across more than 30 subject areas. The postgraduate program caters for a range of study interests, whether you’re seeking higher academic qualification in your chosen discipline, a broader, stimulating course of study in a new discipline you’ve always wanted to investigate, or selective, focused non-award study.

In 2007, the Faculty introduced exciting new graduate courses in areas as diverse as Film Studies, Publishing, English Language in Australia and Digital Communication and Culture. More new courses are available in 2008.

Why Study in the Faculty of Arts?

  • In further confirmation of the University of Sydney's international standing, its humanities faculty has been judged the fifth best in the world in 2006 by one of the most respected global ranking systems, The UK Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) league table. THES only ranks Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard and UC Berkeley higher than the University of Sydney in humanities.
  • Flexible courses allow you to structure a degree to suit your needs; for example, study for a Graduate Certificate, then choose to complete two more units of study for a Graduate Diploma.
  • Whatever career path you take, an Arts degree from the University of Sydney gives you lifelong communication, research and critical thinking skills your employers will value.
  • Some courses, in areas such as Museum Studies, Publishing, Curatorship and Modern Art, include an internship, allowing you to put into practice what you have learnt, while gaining practical experience to improve your career prospects.
  • Access Australia's largest university library, with a research collection of five million books and the world class Scholarly Electronic Text and Imaging Service which provides online access to a vast range of databases, books and journals.
  • Outstanding facilities and approachable staff help you get the most out of your degree. The Faculty is committed to new media and new technology in learning and teaching through its Arts Digital which has incorporated the META Centre. If you are returning to study after a while, the Learning Centre can assist with research and essay writing skills.

Testimonials

I studied History at Sydney because of the range and depth of scholarship across the campus, the potential for conversation between disciplines, the rich collections in the museums and the energetic student community. I am now a museum curator, and doing a thesis developed the research, writing and conceptual skills I use every day. Being a postgraduate also created chances for me to meet people and participate in activities like exhibition making that helped me to get work.

Peace and Conflict Studies is such an important course: students learn from a wide range of disciplines while focusing on how to solve interpersonal and international conflict. I am thoroughly enjoying my time in the degree. What I value are the caring staff members who have been so open with their time and energy – they have influenced and motivated me towards my next step in life.
