Applied Linguistics
Linguistics explores the phonetics, grammar and semantics of individual languages, seeking to uncover the features common to all languages. The Department is widely recognised for its expertise in systemic functional grammar and applied linguistics, while new areas of strength include formal generative linguistics, Lexical Functional Grammar, and indigenous languages of Australia and the Asia-Pacific. Applied Linguistics focuses on the process of teaching and learning of a second language and is suitable for those involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), second language teaching (SLT), teaching modern languages (particularly Korean and Japanese) and other kinds of language education. The program in Applied Linguistics is designed for those interested in applying linguistics to educational and other professional areas.
Crosscultural Communication
With the rise of globalization, crosscultural communication now takes place in most areas of life including the employment fields of tourism, marketing and advertising, business, diplomacy, media, policy-making and co-operation between government and non-government organizations. The Master of Crosscultural Communication has been designed for those working or aspiring to work in these sectors. Students will develop the tools to analyze crosscultural communication on the basis of a sound grounding in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and the ethnography of communication, learning to communicate creatively across cultural boundaries. The unique program allows students to tailor part of their course to suit their own interests, choosing from a spectrum of units ranging from translating to media, tourism studies and professional communication. A diverse student body and a location in the heart of Sydney's multicultural community provides ample opportunities for hands-on research.

The courses will give students a detailed understanding of the emerging digital technologies and their contexts.
The program will suit people with backgrounds in liberal arts, policy and creative practice who want to improve their understanding of emerging technologies. These people recognise the significance of recent developments in ICTs, but have little desire to become low-level technical specialists, nor to take a purely business-centric approach to these changes. Research has found that the publishing industry is in need of employees with both practical production skills as well as an understanding of cultural consumption in theory and practice. These courses consider aspects of book, magazine and electronic publishing, including editing and manuscript preparation; print and website production; marketing and professional communication; and the history of the book and Australian publishing.
The courses are aimed at students who wish to take up, or already occupy, career positions in publishing or other organisations where an in-depth understanding of publishing would enhance their professional prospects. Those who already hold publishing skills will broaden their knowledge to acquire an overview of production and management processes qualifying them for promotion. Recent humanities graduates can gain practical knowledge through work placement and production units.

Course description
