Course requirements
Candidates are required to write a thesis of 70,000-100,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) on a topic approved by the Department embodying the results of the candidate’s own research. The Department may also specify coursework requirements.

The Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth funded Higher Degree Research students with an entitlement to a HECS exemption up to a maximum period of four years’ full time equivalent for a doctorate.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
Course requirements
Candidates are required to write a thesis of 40,000 – 60,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) on a topic approved by the Department embodying the results of the candidates’ own research. The Department may also specify coursework requirements.

The Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth funded Higher Degree Research students with an entitlement to a HECS exemption up to a maximum period of two years’ full time equivalent for a Master of Philosophy degree.
Professional Doctorates: Doctor of Arts (DArts) and Doctor of Social Sciences (DSocSci)
Course requirements
The professional doctorate will comprise 1/3 coursework and 2/3 research
Pattern of progression: 3-4 years full time3-8 years part time
Degree requirements
One core unit, WMST 6902 Arguing the Point, plus 4 elective postgraduate units of study (a total of 30 credit points) and a thesis of 50,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography).

Master of Arts – Research (MA (Research))
Course structure
The MA (Research) can be undertaken in the following ways;
- Two postgraduate units of study (12 credit points) and a thesis of 26,000 – 28,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography), or
- One postgraduate unit of study (6 credit points) and a thesis of 28,000 – 30,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography), or
- A thesis of 30,000 – 35,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography)
The research and writing of the thesis component are to be carried out under the supervision of a member of staff on an approved topic.
