The Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications) program at the University of Sydney is renowned for the depth and breadth of training it offers in the media and communications field.
The program encompasses a host of diverse and expanding industries, which offer exciting national and international employment opportunities. Graduates with this degree will possess the training and skills required for entry into areas such as print, broadcast and online journalism, international communications, media regulation and public policy, and media and public relations.
The degree offers an unparalleled combination of academic excellence and professional training in media and communications. This is achieved by providing practical experience in print, radio, television, online media and media relations and an advanced education in the humanities and/or social sciences.
The basic requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications) are:
- a major in media and communications
- a major from a subject area in Part A
- four special units of study in each of English, Media Law and Ethics, Media Globalisation and Media Relations, and
- an internship in the third or fourth year, representing one third of the annual workload.
The internship forms an integral part of the media and communications degree. Students have undertaken internships in a variety of areas, including competitive national and international journalism placements, public relations and advertising agencies, national television and radio and major print and online media. This is an opportunity for you to undertake practical work experience in a chosen field of interest and can give you a definite edge over other graduates as you seek professional employment after graduation.

Student profile

I chose this degree because of the diversity it offers me - last year I helped to write and produce a radio drama, make a short documentary and continued to improve my French.
There are also so many opportunities to get involved and get as much media experience as possible on campus. I’m one of the student editors on the Uni’s weekly magazine The Bull and there’s a Media Society that holds great events where you can meet other journalists working in the industry.
At the moment I’m doing an internship in the media department of UNICEF Australia, which is awesome because it also really complements my Government major. There is also the opportunity to go on exchange, which is something I’m hoping to do. Being such a small course with an emphasis on group work makes it a really fun degree where you get to know the people you’re studying with. The broad range of subjects offers something for everyone. I’m so glad I chose to do media at Sydney!
