The increasing interconnectedness of the world brought about through travel, communication technology, political processes and globalising markets is opening up new areas for analysis, and new careers to go with them.
International and Global Studies focuses on the way these processes are evolving. The title of the degree reflects the fact that these global processes are linked by national interaction involving nation-state authorities in inter-national relations and also through less formal processes of integration, such as through networks, migration and political and cultural connections. In this degree, we give attention to this full spectrum of global connections.
The degree presents an inter-disciplinary social science approach. In the core part of the degree, students address international and global issues from the perspective of politics, sociology, political economy, anthropology, and media and cultural studies. In their major fields of study, students have the choice of focussing on these disciplines, but can also choose languages, area studies and international business. Students can complement their major field of study with choices from a wider range of subject areas within the University. The degree offers opportunities for study abroad, but has no requirement to do so.
The conceptual ability and skills to interpret and operate effectively in an increasingly integrated world are critical to graduates’ success in a range of professional fields. This degree offers flexibility to orient their studies across this range.
Graduates demonstrate an awareness of major issues in world society, politics, and economy while operating effectively as members of the world community with skills in analysis, evaluation and communication. They compete successfully in the global marketplace in advisory, management, and research positions in both the private and public sector in Australia and beyond, including in combination with other professions working at an international level in, for example, medicine, law or environmental work.
