Admission

This policy should be read in conjunction with the University of Sydney (Amendment Act) Rule 1999 (as amended) Part 9: Admission To Courses (University of Sydney Calendar 2006). The policy applies to 'local' applicants - Australian citizens and Permanent Residents and New Zealand citizens - and relates to the degree courses:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Arts (Media & Communications)
  • Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Arts (Languages)
  • Bachelor of Arts (Digital Technology and Culture)
  • Bachelor of Social Sciences
  • Bachelor of Arts and Sciences
  • Bachelor of Liberal Studies
  • Bachelor of Liberal Studies (International)
  • Bachelor of Global Studies
  • Bachelor of Socio-Legal Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts (Psychology)
  • Bachelor of Economic and Social Sciences
  • Bachelor of International Studies

Applicants for combined degree courses must generally meet the admission policy and procedures of the degree course having the higher entry requirement, while also satisfying any particular admission criteria of the other degree course.

To be offered admission as a candidate for one of these courses an applicant must both:

  • satisfy the Eligibility Criteria, and
  • be selected in the course quota, with selection based on either the Academic Selection Criteria or the Alternative Entry Scheme Criteria, or a combination of the two.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for consideration for admission the University requires applicants to have completed an appropriate qualification. In summary these are:

  • the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent, leading to the calculation of a Universities Admission Index (UAI), or
  • at least one year of full-time tertiary study, or equivalent, or
  • a preparatory course or form of prior learning, approved by the Academic Board.

Applicants who have been excluded* from a degree course are not eligible to be considered for admission unless:

  • they have successfully undertaken study at a similar course level for a minimum of one full-time semester since the exclusion, in which case they will be assessed according to the Academic Selection Criteria and/or
  • they submit a Special Consideration for Admission Scheme application form with supporting documentation to the University of Sydney Admissions Office, usually by late September of the year preceding desired commencement.

* Applicants excluded from one of the courses listed above who are seeking re-admission to the same course should apply directly to the Dean, Faculty of Arts.

The exclusion period for the Bachelor of Arts is two years. Any candidate who has been excluded from a Bachelor of Arts, or similar humanities or social sciences degree, within the last two years will not normally receive special consideration for admission.

The University of Sydney Admissions Office can provide further advice on eligibility criteria (9351 4117/8; ).
