Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws

Students undertaking the combined Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws degrees are able to complete the two degrees in five years of full-time study, rather than the six years which would normally be required, since a number of the law units of study undertaken in the first three years are counted towards both degrees.

The Arts component of the degree is completed in the first three years. A total of 144 credit points must be completed, including:

  • 48 credit points of prescribed law units of study (see the Faculty of Law Handbook);
  • 96 credit points from the Faculty of Arts tables of units of study;
  • a major (36 Senior credit points) from Table A of the units of study listed in the Faculty of Arts Handbook.

Please note that degree requirements change. Students must refer to the handbook for the year they commenced their degree when consulting degree resolutions.

Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at The University of Sydney is recognised for the purposes of admission to practice law as a barrister or solicitor in New South Wales by the NSW Legal Practitioners Admission Board. Under the emerging regime of Mutual Recognition, the degree should also be accepted in the other Australian states and territories. The degree is also recognised for admission purposes in a number of countries, but candidates must check for themselves with the admitting authority (usually the Supreme Court) in each overseas jurisdiction.

Career prospects
Examples include solicitors and barristers. However, an increasing proportion of graduates seek and find employment in the banking and finance sector, accounting firms and management consultancies, corporate management, education and publishing, government departments and regulatory authorities, and in the telecommunications industry, among other areas.

For confirmation and full details of the units of study available, staff lists and degree rules, consult the Faculty of Arts Handbook and Faculty of Law Handbooks.
