Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music Studies

This five-year combined degree program, offered jointly by the Faculty of Arts and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, was first offered in 2004. The course caters for a wide variety of music and music-related careers including arts administration, journalism, music teaching, arts policy, performance and composition (depending on appropriate majors). The full range of Arts majors is available, as well as a compulsory Music major offered by the Department of Music. At the Conservatorium, major studies include instrument or voice or academic study, selected from brass (French Horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba), keyboard (piano, organ, harpsichord), musicology and composition, strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, harp, lute), percussion, vocal studies and woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, recorder). The aim is to develop specific musical expertise within the context of a broad humanities background.

Applicants must satisfy both the entry requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree and for the Conservatorium, take an interview, and audition for major or minor level study in an instrument, voice, musicology or composition (major level only).

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music Studies is a 5-year full-time degree. A total of 240 credit points must be completed, 126 of which must be units of study from the Arts Handbook. The credit points completed in Arts must include:

  • at least 72 Senior credit points in units of study from Part A of the units of study table in the Arts Handbook
  • two majors in subject areas offered by the Faculty of Arts, one of which must be Music; the second major may be from Part A or Part B of the table of units of study

The remaining 114 credit points must be completed in units of study from the Conservatorium Handbook. Please see the Conservatorium Handbook for the requirements of this component of the degree.

Please note that degree requirements change. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure they refer to the degree resolutions of the year they commenced their degree.

For confirmation and full details of the units of study available, staff lists and degree rules, consult the Faculty of Arts Handbook and the Conservatorium Handbook.
