Undergraduate Diplomas
Time Limits
The requirements for the Diploma must be completed within five calendar years of commencement.
Credit for previous studies
Credit for previous studies can be granted for the Diploma. Please contact the Faculty of Arts Office on 61 2 9351 3129 for more information.
Admission
An applicant must either:
a. have a UAI or equivalent (determined by the Faculty) of at least 80.00 and must be enrolled in a degree other than the BA at the University of Sydney, or any degree at another University, or
b. be a graduate of the University of Sydney (or equivalent).
Admission may be limited by quota. If there is a quota, the Faculty will give preference to undergraduate applicants with higher UAIs, and then to postgraduate candidates and graduate applicants with a higher average mark in their undergraduate courses. You must gain permission in writing from the Dean of your Faculty if you are an Undergraduate student.
Honours
To qualify for admission to an Honours course as a Diploma of Arts (Honours), Diploma of Languages (Honours), or Diploma of Social Sciences (Honours) candidate, an applicant must:
- have qualified for the award of the pass degree of Bachelor;
- have completed at least 48 senior credit points at a credit average in the subject area in which they are applying for Honours, and have met any other department entry requirements as specified in the Table of Units of Study;
- have written permission from the relevant Chair of Department.

Diploma of Arts
The Diploma is awarded in three grades: Pass, Pass with Merit, and Honours.
1. To qualify for the Pass Diploma, candidates must complete at least 48 credit points, including at least 36 senior credit points, in one of the following subject areas:
- American Studies
- Ancient History
- Arab World, Islam & the Middle East
- Archaeology
- Art History and Theory
- Asian Studies
- Australian Literature
- Australian Studies
- Classical Studies
- Cultural Studies
- English
- Gender Studies
- History
- Jewish Civilisation Thought & Culture
- Linguistics
- Medieval Studies
- Music
- Philosophy
- Studies in Religion
The subject area will be shown in brackets on the testamur.
2. To qualify for the Diploma (with Merit), candidates must obtain an average mark of at least 75 in all of their units of study and have no Fail (F) or Discontinued Fail (DF) results.
3. To qualify for the Diploma (Honours), candidates must complete a final year honours course in one of the listed subject areas and obtain a mark of at least 60.
Diploma of Language Studies
The Diploma is awarded in three grades: Pass, Pass with Merit, and Honours.
1. To qualify for the pass Diploma, candidates must complete at least 48 credit points, including at least 36 senior credit points, in one of the following language study areas:
- Arabic
- Chinese
- French
- German
- Hindi and Urdu
- Greek (Classical)
- Greek (Modern)
- Hebrew (Classical)
- Hebrew (Modern)
- Indonesian
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Latin
- Sanskrit
- Spanish
- Yiddish
The language study area will be shown in brackets on the testamur.
2. To qualify for the Diploma (with Merit), candidates must obtain an average mark of at least 75 in all of their units of study and have no Fail (F) or Discontinued Fail (DF) results.
3. To qualify for the Diploma (Honours), candidates must complete a final year honours course in one of the listed subject areas and obtain a mark of at least 60.
Diploma of Social Sciences
The Diploma is awarded in three grades: Pass, Pass with Merit, and Honours.
1. To qualify for the Pass Diploma, candidates must complete at least 48 credit points, including at least 36 senior credit points, in one of the following disciplines:
- Government and International Relations
- Political Economy
- Social Anthropology
- Sociology
- Sociology and Social Policy

2. To qualify for the Diploma (with Merit), candidates must obtain an average mark of at least 75 in all of their units of study and have no Fail (F) or Discontinued Fail (DF) results.
3. To qualify for the Diploma (Honours), candidates must complete a final year honours course in one of the listed subject areas and obtain a mark of at least 60.
