Bachelor of Liberal Studies
The Bachelor of Liberal Studies is a 4-year full-time degree.
A liberal studies degree is ideal for students who are passionate about both the humanities, including languages, and the sciences. The degree is distinguished from the combined Arts/Science degree by taking four years, not five, and requiring compulsory language study.
The Bachelor of Liberal Studies allows students to pursue their interests in science and the humanities while acquiring knowledge and skills that are applicable to many areas of employment. The extent of subject choice is very wide, and specific career options will depend upon students' choice of their Arts and Science majors.
Bachelor of Liberal Studies graduates can also undertake subsequent postgraduate programs that enable them focus on a major area of interest, diversify their studies, or study for a professional qualification by undertaking, for example, the University's graduate medicine or law degrees.
The requirements for the degree are as follows:
- at least one major (36 senior credit points) in a subject area from the Part A Table of Units of Study in the Arts Handbook;
- at least one major in a subject area from Table 1 of the Units of Study in the Science Handbook;
- at least 30 credit points, including 18 senior credit points, in a language other than English from Part A of the Arts Handbook;
- a minimum of 6 credit points in Mathematics or Statistics;
- a 6 credit point unit of study in communication and analytical skills, or in other academic skills as prescribed (currently ENGL1007 or ENGL1000 or LNGS1001);
- at least 120 intermediate or senior credit points.
Please note that these resolutions are for students who begin this degree in 2006. For students previously enrolled please consult the Faculty of Arts Handbook for the relevant year.
For confirmation and full details of the units of study available, staff lists and degree rules, consult the 2006 Handbook.
