    One of Australia's top humanities awards has gone to a Faculty of Arts academic who recently published a history of amateur and aspiring writers in twentieth century Britain. Dr Christopher Hilliard, a lecturer in modern European history, will be presented with the Max Crawford Medal in a ceremony at the University of Sydney tonight.

    Adult themes gain judges' approval

    Kate Crawford, from the Faculty of Arts Media and Communications Department, was named individual winner of the Manning Clark House 2006 National Cultural Award for Adult Themes: Rewriting the Rules of Adulthood (Macmillan, 2006). The award is for outstanding contributions to the quality of Australian cultural life. The book asks why are so many people are rejecting the traditional path of marriage, mortgage and a fast-track career.

    Three academics from the Faculty of Arts are among the latest group of outstanding scholars elected to the prestigious Australian Academy of Humanities. Fellows elected to the Academy are residents of Australia who have achieved the highest distinction in scholarship in the humanities. The latest University of Sydney scholars elected to the Academy are Professor Roger Benjamin, Associate Professor Iain Gardner and Dr Alan James.
