The Research Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (RIHSS) was established in 1997 to enhance the University of Sydney's role as an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the humanities and social sciences.

RIHSS works with University faculties and departments to creative a vigorous multi-disciplinary research environment for staff, research fellows and students throughout the faculties of Arts, Education and Social Work, Economics and Business, Law, and the Sydney College of the Arts and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

The Centre for Cross Cultural Research is based at the Australian National University (ANU). Its aim is to develop new modes of research, in conjunction with traditional scholarly methods, to provide insights into the ways that cross-cultural relations and histories are constructed and represented. It conducts a number of projects, conferences, symposia, and graduate courses.
